Treat yo'self: ten talismans & treasures for heart-centered entrepreneurs

Along your entrepreneurship journey, you’re bound to encounter times when you doubt your choices, your path, everything. During those moments of uncertainty, it’s important to remember ‘your why.’

One way to do this is by surrounding yourself with items that remind you why you started this crazy journey we call entrepreneurship. Think of them as talisman if that serves you, or simply beautiful, special objects that spark joy within you. It's also important to be kind to yourself when you're going through a rough patch, whether that be with a relaxing spa service or simply taking a little time out of the day for yourself.

Now, we’re not saying that joy and inspiration should always come from material things—far from it, we absolutely believe that time is better than things. But, especially as busy entrepreneurs and moms who often put the needs of others before our own self-care, sometimes we have to be reminded that it’s okay—critical, even—to look out for number one (that’s you, beautiful, powerful mama!).  So don’t delay, and never feel guilty — treat yo’self, whether that’s with a special object or a service that makes you feel special.

Here are a few beautiful things we love…

 

A charm bracelet, mala beads or other talisman-like jewelry

During times of stress, a physical talisman that’s always nearby -- like a piece of jewelry -- can be a lifesaver. Think about when you were a child and you had a special blanket or toy that you were never without. A piece of jewelry can have the same effect for us today as our security blankets did as children.

Consider a mantraband, charming bracelets with inspiring phrases that are a perfect way to remind you why you started. Similarly, a charm bracelet, mala beads or any other talisman-like jewelry would be perfect choices -- choose a piece that calms you, even just by touch.

You’ve got a long, long list of to-dos to check off your list— but first coffee, right? A motivating mug for your cup-o-joe is key, especially when you could use a little get-up-and-go as a super-busy mom.

Whether you’re a latte gal or a tea-drinker, take a cue from Sara Blakely and begin collecting beautiful charming mugs that will push you to go the extra mile when you get a case of the Mondays.

 

A vision board for your dreams

Sure, every workspace needs wifi — but have you considered that every workspace could really use a vision board, too? It’s so important to get clear on your dreams and manifest them in a physical way that keeps you grounded and tuned-in to your why.

Vision boarding can be a tremendously therapeutic and energizing exercise, and it doesn’t take much to get started. Grab some magazines, some photos, and your 3rd-grader’s art supplies, then turn on some of your favorite tunes and get going. You can even let the kiddos color as you build your dreamscape.

 

A treasure repaired, replaced or recycled

We mentioned at the outset that you should only surround yourself with items that spark joy, right? That’s the basic premise behind Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method™ for tidying up:

“Belongings are acknowledged for their service and thanked before being let go of, if they no longer spark joy. People are drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective, and optimistic.”

If you don’t have time to KonMari all your stuff, start small. Go through your closet or your decorative objects and get rid of the items that no longer serve you, or scour your home for all the broken things and decide if you’ll fix them, replace them, or repurpose them -- either as a donation or via an alternate use (like turning a beautiful but chipped teacup into a vessel for small earrings). You’ll feel better immediately.

Another idea? collect all your old t-shirts and commission Pepperlane member Jana Blanchette to make you a memory quilt, then wrap yourself in your favorite memories.

 

A notebook or planner for your bag to capture your thoughts

Just like we’ve recommended starting your day with a few minutes of journaling, it’s important to always carry a notebook or planner with you to capture your ideas, dreams and thoughts.

One notebook we love is the Rocketbook, which is a smart notebook that can be — get this — erased in the microwave. They even have a model that can now be fully digitized, then erased (like this Moleskin for Evernote).  Or, if you’re more of an analog type of gal, check out the Productivity Planner from Intelligent Change, the same folks who brought us the Five Minute Journal, which we love.

Of course, as always, any notebook will do - the important thing is to carry it with you and get writing!

 

A positive twist on something you’re not wild about

If you’re not a morning person, being a mom is already a tough gig. If you’re a mom with a kid on the swim/gymnastics/skating team, it’s even tougher.

If you’re not a fan of having to get up at the crack of dawn to take your kid to practice, try re-framing it as ‘you’ time — and use the time to treat yourself to a special latte (either from your favorite coffee shop or one you make at home). You can even use the time to journal and set your intention for the day.

 

A gorgeous wallpaper for your desktop and phone

For digital inspiration, consider free desktop art for your computer and backgrounds for your phone. While you may keep a photo of your kids on your lock screen, keep your home screen just for you, emblazoned with your favorite, energizing mantra.

 

A water bottle that nourishes your body and soul

You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure to practice self-care and keep your own vessel full — that is, well-hydrated!

We’re always encouraging our kids to drink their water, so let’s practice a little kindness and make sure our body is tuned up and ready to go. After all, proper hydration improves brain function and helps us perform at our best. Choose whatever bottle you like and set a goal to refill it at least 1-2 times per day.

 

A bunch of fresh flowers, just for you

When’s the last time you bought yourself flowers, just because? Fresh flowers can bring vibrancy and life to your workspace, and spark great joy. As Valentino once said, “I love beauty, it’s not my fault.”

Not everything needs to have utility to make it a worthwhile investment. If your office supply budget is tight, cut stems from your own garden, exchange with a neighbor, or pick up a bunch from your local flower stand or grocery store.

And, if you’re a real bloom-lover? Consider gifting yourself a bouquet subscription once you hit a certain milestone or goal in your business - or ask Pepperlane member Annie Richardson to design a custom bouquet for you. Fresh flowers are a real game-changer, and you deserve it.
 

A moment or two for mom

It's so important to take time to nourish your own soul. Studies have shown that strong friendships are one of the keys to good health, happiness and longevity, so take time to share coffee and conversation with a friend --  even if it’s just over Skype, as a way to break up your workday.

Of course, for all of these options, the most important thing is that they have meaning or value for you and that they replenish you or ladder back to your big why — the reason you started your business — and the reason you’ll keep on going, even when the going gets tough.
