1:1 with Pepperlaner Lisa Dahl

Lisa DahlIn our new 1:1 series, we talk to women who are full members in our Pepperlane community about their business and how they use Pepperlane to learn, grow and solve business challenges.

Tell us about your business

As an Intuitive Eating and Body Image Health Coach, I work with women to help them break free from the shackles of dieting and diet culture and to UNDiet their lives.

Have you always owned this business or what made you decide to start it?

Yes and no. I am a former caterer and had a business that I loved called Simply Dahlicious Custom Catering and Confections. I started Simply Dahlicious in 2004 when my now ex-husband and I moved to Hopkinton, MA, and purchased a home with two kitchens. I could legally work from home and raise my two children, who were 8 and 13 at the time.

It was a perfect scenario where I could care for my children, enjoy creating beautiful food, and work with clients from intimate dinner parties to weddings of 300 guests. That all began to unravel when I asked for a divorce and lost my home, kitchen, and health insurance. I was able to keep my business going for another few years, and in 2011, I reluctantly accepted an opportunity to merge my boutique catering business with another catering company. Knowing it was not in my heart (losing my autonomy and working for someone else was a painful decision), I knew that security and financial stability were best at that time.

Fast forward several years, when my now partner and I first chose to move in together in 2016, he gave me the most amazing gift which was time. As a lifelong dieter and a love of fitness, I thought that health and wellness coaching would be a perfect fit. I received my personal training certification and completed my health and wellness coaching certification. I intended to support women to lose weight as weight loss had been a primary focus for me since I was 12 and could eat "healthier," restrict and deprive better than most, all in the name of health and feeling empowered by my smaller size. I quit my job on a Friday and went back to school the following Monday, which was the beginning of a new career.

My mission and passion are to educate and support women to create a life free of dieting. I empower them to learn to listen, trust and respect their bodies to be happy, healthy, and confident at any size.

While working with my clients, I finally acknowledged the amount of stress I felt daily about weighing myself and the anxiety I noticed from my clients on their "share your progress" days. I began to take weight off the table as a measure of success with my clients; they would be making fantastic progress with their actions and behaviors, only to be defeated by the scale.

Because of my desire to learn, grow, and be the best coach I can be, I continuously read and took classes to further my education. I discovered the community of Health At Every Size® (HAES®), Intuitive Eating, and Be Body Positive, which began my journey of ditching the diet, shifting my perspective on weight, health and sizeism. These communities changed my life personally and professionally. I discovered I had my own disordered eating challenges and knew that I could no longer support women to lose weight as dieting is the pathway to disordered eating and eating disorders.

My mission and passion are to educate and support women to create a life free of dieting. I empower them to learn to listen, trust and respect their bodies to be happy, healthy, and confident at any size. I am grateful to have a business that I love and see the joy that body peace & food freedom offers my clients.

We like to say that everyone has a journey to Pepperlane. How do you use Pepperlane as a female entrepreneur balancing business with motherhood?

I have been a part of the Pepperlane family for over three years and love being a Boost leader. We are all moms, no matter how old our children are.

At first, I was hesitant to join Pepperlane - I have grown kids that are now 29 and 25. But, I quickly discovered there is a space here for all of us. My daughter is an entrepreneur as well, and what I learn in this community is directly shared with her, and I get to watch her thrive and excel with me.

As a coach for women, I love to facilitate, and this gives me another opportunity to support and connect ambitious, smart moms as we all learn, grow and rise together.

What do you like most about Pepperlane?

I value the feedback and incredible rich resources in this community. It is easy to pop on a boost and get valuable information quickly. The instant group support allows my challenge to be less of an obstacle and the next step now becomes more manageable.
