Jennifer-Mack-me 2girls 2In our new 1:1 series, we talk to women who are full members in our Pepperlane community about their business and how they use Pepperlane to learn, grow and solve business challenges.

Tell us about your business

I work with students in grades K-6 in all academic areas, but primarily in reading, writing and math. I also work with the student's teachers and parents to provide personalized academic support so they feel confident and successful in all aspects of education.

Have you always owned this business or what made you decide to start it?

I began my teaching career in 2003 after earning my Master's degree from Lesley University. I have taught first and second grades and worked in classrooms with students from Kindergarten through grade 6. I left public education in 2015 to be home with my family, and I started my own tutoring business a few years later. JMack Academics is now in its third year of business and thriving!

There is something magical about being able to have a conversation with intelligent, business-savvy women who also understand firsthand what it is like to balance motherhood with building a business. I don't know where I'd be without Pepperlane!

We like to say that everyone has a journey to Pepperlane. How do you use Pepperlane as a female entrepreneur balancing business with motherhood?

I am so grateful for Pepperlane and its wonderful leaders and members. When I joined Pepperlane years ago, I literally came to a Boost with the idea of starting my own tutoring business. That was all I had, and I had no idea where to begin. By working with Sharon and all of the amazing women I met, I learned how to build a business in the way that I wanted while also building my confidence in myself as an entrepreneur. There is something magical about being able to have a conversation with intelligent, business-savvy women who also understand firsthand what it is like to balance motherhood with building a business. I don't know where I'd be without Pepperlane!

What do you struggle with?

I definitely struggle with the work/family balance, especially with tutoring. Now that Covid is moving on (hopefully) most students are back in school so my primary hours to work with them coincide with the time my 15-year-old is also home from school. I struggle to balance being here to support them while trying to help as many students as possible during after-school hours. Despite the struggle, I am so thankful that I have the flexibility to make my own schedule and modify it as needed.

How can someone best work with you and what is your core product offering?

I primarily work with students one-on-one, but sometimes run small groups if I have a few students working on the same topic. I prefer to work with students in person, but I do offer virtual sessions as well.

Honestly, it starts simply with an email or phone call. Let me know a bit about what you are looking for in terms of support for you and your child and we will set up a call. Once I have a clearer picture of what is needed, we devise a plan together that best supports you both. Typically I gather your detailed observations from home, and then I like to connect with your child's teacher to discuss their observations of your child in school. Having a way to communicate with the school is extremely helpful for me to be able to design an individualized plan based on your student's specific areas of need.

Where can clients learn more about you or purchase a package?
Once we decide to work together, we look at a calendar and book some sessions. I send out an agreement that we both sign so we are on the same page with how everything works. Sessions usually take place once or twice a week. I bill my clients at the end of every month for the number of sessions held. Sometimes, we develop a package specific to your needs, but I am very flexible in working with the family to meet everyone's needs.

What's your favorite feature of Pepperlane Membership?

I love all of the free, informative, and timely workshops; the one Boost a month that is included in membership; and the relationships built in the Pepperlane FB page! Any time I need advice or want some help brainstorming, all I need to do is post my ask in the group and I typically get lots of helpful and supportive ideas on how to move forward.
